Heartland at the Alberta Circular Plastics Day Conference

Fostering sustainability within the Plastics Industry.

Heartland Polymers continues to believe in better, and that includes continually finding new and better ways to keep plastic out of landfills.  As a modern polypropylene producer, sustainability is woven into the very core values that Heartland Polymers was founded on.

“Being a safe, responsible operator and producer of quality plastic is something that Heartland Polymers is very proud of.  We consider it important to contribute to solutions on plastic waste while keeping this vital product a part of our economy and part of our solutions to a wide range of human needs,” Lorraine Royer, General Manager of government, stakeholder, and Indigenous relations with Inter Pipeline (Heartland Polymers’ parent company).

The Heartland Polymers team believes that polypropylene has an established place in the plastics circular economy and was happy to share their perspective at the 2024 Alberta Circular Plastics Day Conference.

This is the second year in a row that the IPL team has taken a front seat participating in various panels to share their learnings and knowledge on environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

“Participating in events like Alberta Circular Plastics Day underscores our commitment to fostering collaboration and transparency within the industry,” said Lorraine.

Practical Sustainability

Speaking of collaboration, researchers from Plastics Research in Action (PRIA) were also on hand at the conference to talk about their partnership with Heartland Polymers on work such as The Asphalt Project; an initiative to blend post-consumer plastic with asphalt to create a new asphalt blend that better withstands the cold climate we face in Alberta.

“It was truly inspiring to connect and converse with so many passionate individuals who are driving progress in the plastics circular economy,” said Dr. Adetoyese Oyedun, Senior Project Manager at NAIT overseeing the PRIA partnership.

By partnering with the researchers at PRIA, the Heartland Polymers team is happy to support applied scientific research in identifying opportunities and tangible solutions to reuse and recycle plastic waste.

Sustainability in the plastics industry is an ever-evolving journey that requires a consistent commitment to progress and continual improvement.  The team at Heartland Polymers understands the weight of this commitment and is up to the task.
