Women Building Futures at Heartland

I helped build this.

Some people have a scrapbook to record their memorable achievements, but Taylor Enders has North America’s first integrated PDH/PP facility. A graduate of the Women Building Futures (WBF) program, Enders helped build Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC), one of the largest and most sophisticated industrial builds in Alberta’s history.

In 2019, Inter Pipeline committed $580,000 to a partnership with WBF to raise awareness and provide pre-apprenticeship training to women in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland area. The training, offered through WBF’s Journeywoman Start program, included a 17-week classroom and hands-on pre-apprenticeship training program that introduces students to six different industrial trades.

One of 23 WBF graduates who worked on-site during the build, Enders has gone on to a career with Kiewit Construction. For her, seeing HPC become fully operational in 2022 will be a moment of great pride.

“The team at Women Building Futures is really supportive. They teach you everything you need to know to work in the field. Being on this project means everything to me because I built it,” she says.

One day I’ll drive by with my kids and tell them I helped build this plant

Ashley Marr, Director of Operational Readiness at HPC, says the inclusive team spirit during the design and construction phase helped maximize the partnership with WBF. Vendors, contractors, and fellow colleagues were supportive throughout.

We’re a people-centred company and we believe diversity in talent and life experience makes us better in everything we do

“WBF really helped us bring our vision to life by empowering women to pursue careers in industrial trades. We’re very proud of the impact this program has had on our organization and the lives of the graduates,” says Marr

With COVID-19 impacting in-person training, WBF was required to pivot to a virtual platform. The transition was highly successful as WBF has been able to safely graduate 64 students from their pre-apprenticeship program, Journeywoman Start, since March 2020.
