Better by design: Reflecting on four years of building something different

Yonas Kebede reflects on how Heartland’s integrated single-site design and four years of operational experience have helped establish the company as a trusted polypropylene supplier.

Four years after producing its first polypropylene pellet, Heartland Polymers has evolved from the newest entrant in the market to a proven producer serving customers across North America and the globe.

When we first entered commercial production, Heartland introduced North America’s only single-site, integrated propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and polypropylene (PP) facility. Located in a uniquely weather-secure region with direct access to one of the world’s most abundant supplies of propane feedstock, Heartland offered a new source of polypropylene supply.

Today, Heartland is leveraging both the advantages of this integrated production model and four years of operating experience to help customers navigate evolving supply chain challenges while delivering the quality, reliability and personalized support they depend on.

We sat down with Yonas Kebede, Director, Polypropylene Sales & Marketing, to discuss what Heartland has learned over the past four years, how its unique design continues to strive for better and create value, and why customers are increasingly turning to Heartland as a long-term supply partner.

“Heartland has matured into a proven polypropylene producer with a growing track record of performance, reliability and customer-focused service.”
Yonas Kebede, Director, Polypropylene Sales & Marketing

Q: Heartland recently marked four years since producing its first polypropylene pellet. What does this milestone mean to you?

I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished over the past four years.

Producing our first polypropylene pellet was an important milestone, but it was really the beginning of our journey. From day one, our goal was to build something different for the polypropylene market. Not just a new facility, but a fully integrated operation designed to provide customers with greater visibility, consistency and reliability throughout the value chain.

Over the past four years, we’ve operated through market volatility, supply chain disruptions and changing customer expectations. Each experience has helped us strengthen our operations, deepen our expertise and improve how we support our customers. Today, Heartland has matured into a proven polypropylene producer with a growing track record of performance, reliability and customer-focused service.

Q: How does Heartland’s integrated design create value for customers?

Our integrated facility remains one of our greatest advantages.

At Heartland, we convert propane into polymer grade propylene (PGP) and then into polypropylene at a single site. Rather than relying on externally sourced PGP, our complex produces the key building block for polypropylene on-site through our PDH unit before converting it into finished polymer. Most of the propane feeding our PDH unit is sourced locally, including from a nearby sister facility. This gives us greater visibility and control throughout the production process, which supports one of the things customers value most: consistency.

Converters depend on resin that performs reliably from shipment to shipment. Consistent resin performance helps support manufacturing efficiency, product quality and customer satisfaction. By combining our integrated operations, modern production technology and rigorous quality programs, we’re able to deliver the consistent quality customers count on.

After four years of operating experience, we’ve also been able to further optimize our processes and maximize the advantages of this design, creating even greater value for customers.

Q: How have customer expectations of polypropylene suppliers evolved in recent years?

Reliability remains one of the most important factors in supplier selection. Customers want confidence that their supplier can consistently deliver both quality product and dependable supply. They are also looking closely at supply chain resilience and risk management as they evaluate sourcing strategies.

Heartland was intentionally designed to provide customers with greater supply chain diversity and an alternative source of polypropylene supply. Located in Alberta, Canada, we benefit from access to an abundant supply of local propane feedstock and a geographic location removed from many of the weather-related risks commonly associated with the Gulf Coast. Combined with our world-scale production capacity, extensive rail access and dedicated logistics network, we’re able to provide customers with greater confidence in their sourcing strategies.

Beyond delivering a high-quality resin, customers are looking for a supplier that understands their business and can support their specific needs. We take the time to understand each customer’s business, production requirements and long-term objectives so we can provide tailored support that many suppliers aren’t positioned to offer. Whether it’s technical guidance, product recommendations, supply planning, logistics coordination or day-to-day communication, our team works closely with customers to help them succeed. The combination of dependable product, secure supply and personalized support is something customers consistently tell us sets Heartland apart.

Q: How has Heartland’s operational experience over the past four years strengthened the business and what it can offer customers?

Operating North America’s only integrated PDH/PP facility comes with unique opportunities and challenges. Over the past four years, we’ve developed valuable expertise across operations, maintenance, logistics and customer service.

Like any major operation of this scale, our early years involved learning, optimization and continuous improvement. Today, we’re able to apply those lessons every day. Our teams are more experienced, our processes are stronger and our understanding of the facility continues to deepen. Most importantly, we’ve achieved these results while maintaining a strong commitment to safety. As of the second quarter of this year, Heartland operated for more than seven million hours without a lost-time injury.

We’ve also achieved some of the longest operating runs in our history, improved recovery performance and successfully completed a major turnaround during the peak of winter. These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our people and have strengthened our ability to deliver better for customers.

Every challenge we’ve faced has helped make us a stronger operator, and our customers benefit from that experience through greater reliability, consistency and responsiveness.

Q: What can customers expect from Heartland in the years ahead?

This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come, but we’re even more focused on where we’re going.

Manufacturers will continue to face changing market conditions, evolving supply chains and growing sustainability expectations. Through it all, customers will continue to value trusted partners who can help them navigate uncertainty. We believe Heartland is uniquely positioned for that future. Our integrated production model, strategic location and growing operational experience provide a strong foundation for continued success.

What started as a bold vision has become a proven operation, and we’re committed to continuing to strengthen our performance, deepen relationships and create long-term value for our customers. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past four years, and equally excited about what’s to come.
